Big Third Period Lifts Warriors over Ice Miners

CONNELLSVILLE, PA - Although they still haven't scored a first period goal all season, the Michigan Warriors netted three in the third, en route to a 3-2 victory over the Ice Miners on Saturday night at The Ice Mine. Garrison Sanipass, Cam Jorgenson, and Colin Horton all scored goals for the Warriors as they picked up just their second win of 2014-15.

The Ice Miners and Warriors played to a scoreless tie through the first 40 minutes, with goaltenders Alex Blankenburg and Trevor Gorsuch both shutting out the opposing offense. It took just 31 seconds into the third period for Austin Romzek to score, walking in on a 2-on-1 and backhanding a shot past Gorsuch. It was the third straight game with a goal for Romzek.

It didn't take long for the Warriors to answer when Garrison Sanipass buried his own rebound at 2:34 of the period. Felllow new acquision, Luke Formica added an assist. The Warriors traded for Sanipass from Johnstown and Formice from Rio Grande Valley, both on September 23rd. Only 25 seconds later, Cam Jorgenson snuck a shot past Blankenburg to give Michigan its first lead. A.J. Marcinek added an assist.

At 15:23 Colin Horton added the dagger when he lofted a shot past Blankenburg to make it 3-1. Sanipass added his 2nd point of the night with an assist. Noah Batis scored a powerplay goal in the dying seconds, but it was too little too late and the Ice Miners fell, 3-2. Gorsuch was the first star, making 32 saves.

The Ice Miners and Warriors will play again on Sunday at 4:00 at the Ice Mine. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and military members, $7 for children. The gates will open at 3:00.
