Big Fifth Inning Too Much for Bulls

DURHAM, NC - Casper Wells delivered an RBI triple as part of a four-run fourth inning for the Mud Hens in a 6-2 victory over the Durham Bulls on Monday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The loss snapped the Bulls season long five-game winning streak.

The Mud Hens used back-to-back singles by Will Rhymes and Jeff Salazar to get things going in the top of the fifth inning. Brian Baker (7-7) then walked Timo Perez to load the bases. Baker was able to get Ryan Strieby to ground out, but Rhymes scored on the play giving the Mud Hens a 3-0 lead. After a throwing error by Bulls catcher Nevin Ashley allowed Salazar to score, Casper Wells ripped a triple to center field scoring Strieby and making it 5-0. The Bulls then went to the bullpen brining in Ryan Reid and he gave up a single to Scott Thorman that drove in Wells.

The Bulls responded in the bottom of the fifth inning when JJ Furmaniak blasted an Adam Wilk (5-5) fastball over the left-field fence for his fourth home run of the season. The Bulls would tack on another run in the inning when Brandon Guyer doubled home Ray Olmedo to cut the lead to 6-2.

Wilk picked up the win for Toledo going five and two-thirds innings and allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out six. Brendan Wise and Enrique Gonzalez coming to finish off the game for the Mud Hens going three and a third innings and allowing just one hit.

The bullpen for the Bulls was good as well Reid went three and two-thirds innings allowing just one-hit and striking out five. Mike Ekstrom also threw a hitless frame to finish the game for the Bulls.

Durham will begin a four-game series with Gwinnett on Tuesday, July 26 at 7:05 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Bulls will send Matt Torra (0-0) to the mound against the Braves Julio Teheran (10-1). The game can be heard on 620 the Buzz, and tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com .
