Lancaster JetHawks News Release
ADELANTO, Calif. - The JetHawks rallied to tie the game with two runs in the eighth inning, but the High Desert Mavericks came back with a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the inning to win 11-4 on Friday night at Heritage Field.
Richard Gonzalez laid down a squeeze bunt to tie the game 4-4 in the top of the eighth. The JetHawks (5-8) had scored a run on a Marc Wik ground ball earlier in the frame.
High Desert (12-4) responded with a huge bottom half of the inning. Angel Heredia (0-2) walked the leadoff man before yielding a go-ahead double to Travis Demeritte. A Scott Heineman two-out RBI-single chased Heredia from the game. Edgardo Sandoval came on in relief and gave up a hit, walked a batter and hit a batter before Seth Spivey broke the game wide open with a grand slam. The Mavericks totaled seven runs in the inning.
The grand slam was High Desert's fourth home run of the night. Luke Tendler hit two homers, a solo shot and a two-run shot, while Tripp Martin hit a solo homer in the second.
Martin's home run tied the game after the JetHawks had taken the lead in the second. Drew Ferguson led off the inning with a single and Marc Wik drove him home with a double into the left field corner.
High Desert would come right back with Tendler's two-run homer in the third to give them their first lead. Starter Trent Thornton went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Lancaster got within one run in the fifth inning against Mavs starter David Ledbetter. Jason Martin tripled with two outs and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-2. Ledbetter struck out eight and allowed just two runs over seven innings.
The JetHawks tied the game against Shane McCain (1-0) in the eighth, but the left-hander ended up as the winning pitcher.
Lancaster will look to pick up its first win of the series on Saturday night at Heritage Field. Joshua James (1-1) is scheduled to start against Cole Wiper (2-0). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
