
Big Eighth Inning Nets Captains a Sweep

SHREVEPORT, La. - Although Ryan DiPietro pitched very well through seven innings on Sunday, his Shreveport-Bossier Captains were tied 4-4 with the El Paso Diablos heading into the eighth inning. Reliever Jameson Maj got the Diablos out in the top half, and the Captains got six hits in the bottom half, sending them to a 7-4 win and a three-game sweep in front of 964 fans at Fair Grounds Field.
Jovanny Rosario started the bottom of the eighth with a bunt single against Christian Staehely (0-5), and then stole second. Christopher Garcia followed with a single up the middle to score Rosario with the eventual game-winning run. But the Captains (45-32, 16-14 2nd half) did not stop there. Jorge Alvarez singled to move Garcia to second, and after a flyout, Andres Rodriguez plated Garcia with a hit to left, and Andre Marshall knocked in Alvarez with a grounder down the first-base line.
Hector Carrasco picked up where he left off on Saturday night, with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to get his 16th save of the season.
DiPietro retired 11 of the first 13 hitters he faced, allowing an infield single in the first that was erased on a double play,a nd a two-out walk in the fourth. His mates got him the lead in the fourth on a bloop double by Palmer Karr and an RBI two-bagger from Alvarez, followed four batters later by a bases-loaded walk from Jesse Estrada to Jeff Hulett.
El Paso (26-50, 7-23) came back with single runs in the fifth and sixth, before the Captains got back-to-back RBIs from Bryan Sabatella and Rosario to chase Estrada in the bottom of the sixth. The Diablos once again evened the score in the seventh, though, when Jeff Vincent hit a two-run, two-out single off DiPietro.
The Captains lefty did go seven, allowing seven hits and four runs (with two earned) with a walk and three strikeouts. Maj (3-0) and Carrasco did the rest, giving the Captains their fourth series sweep of the year, all at home.
Notes: Two of Maj's three wins are over El Paso and four of Staehely's five losses are to Shreveport-Bossier.All nine Captains had at least one hit and seven drove in runs.The Captains won five of their final six games against El Paso at Fair Grounds Field after losing four of the first six in Shreveport to the Diablos. Rosario stole two bases, moving him to within two of Brian Fryer's single-season league-record 49.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains continue their nine-game, 10-day, season-long homestand with one game against the Pensacola Pelicans, starting at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, August 9.
