Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 6, 2013) - The Fort Myers Miracle remained undefeated in the young season with a 10-6 win over the Bradenton Marauders on Saturday night at Hammond Stadium in front of a crowd of 7,241.
The Miracle offense unleashed a 10-run, 12-hit barrage on the Marauder pitching staff that featured five extra-base hits including two home runs. Fort Myers took advantage of three first inning errors by the Marauders and scored five unearned runs off Bradenton starter Matt Benedict.
With one out, Eddie Rosario singled. Miguel Sano and Mike Gonzales each reached on errors by the Marauder infield to load the bases and bring up designated hitter Kennys Vargas. On a 1-2 pitch, Vargas lifted a fly ball down the left field line that kicked up chalk for a double and plated two. Lance Ray followed with another double and collected a pair of runs batted in to give Fort Myers a 4-0 lead.
The Miracle loaded the bases a second time when Jhonathan Goncalves reached on an error and Benedict walked Kyle Knudson. Stephen Wickens then flew out to right field to score Ray and push the Fort Myers lead to 5-0.
In the second inning, Gonzales launched a 1-1 pitch into the trunk of the palm trees beyond the right field fence with a runner on and one out. The home run was Gonzales' first of the season.
Bradenton attempted to close the gap with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings of Miracle starter Matt Summers. Jose Osuna registered a RBI double and Dan Gamache had a RBI sacrifice fly in the third while Alen Hanson notched a run-scoring triple and Taylor Lewis an RBI double in the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Miracle returned fire with a pair of runs. Gonzales scored on a bases loaded wild pitch and Goncalves came home on a bases loaded hit batsman. Fort Myers extended the lead to 10-4 with a solo home run from Eddie Rosario, his first in the Florida State League.
The Marauders would push across two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on run-scoring singles from Chris Lashmet and Lewis off Miracle reliever Adrian Salcedo.
In the final three innings, the Miracle bullpen faced the minimum. Ryan O'Rourke entered the game and set down six consecutive in the seventh and eighth with a pair of strikeouts. Zack Jones finished the game with a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth in a non-save situation.
The Fort Myers Miracle (3-0) look to sweep the series with Bradenton Marauders (0-3) in the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. at McKechnie Field. Madison Boer will make his 2013 debut for the Miracle opposite Adrian Sampson for the Marauders. Fans can listen to every pitch on www.miraclebaseball.com beginning with the Square 1 Burgers and Bar pregame show at 12:45 p.m. with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman.
