Big 9th Leads To Ports Win, 12-5
August 28, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The Bakersfield Blaze had its three-game win streak snapped, as the visiting Stockton Ports mashed a pair of three-run homers en route to a 12-5 final, a score that belied the hotly contested nature of most of the ballgame. The game was, of course, the penultimate regular season home game at Sam Lynn Ballpark, and another sell-out, marking back-to-back packed houses for the first time in many years.
The Blaze scored first in this contest, and the two clubs went back and forth a bit early on. The man they call Mr. August, Austin Wilson, mashed his fourth homer in three days off Ports starter Grant Holmes (W, 10-7) for a 2-0 lead.
The Ports fought back with a solo homer of their own, and then one inning later, a triple and a sacrifice fly knotted the contest at two runs apiece.
Stockton moved out in front for good in the 5th when a single and an error set the table for a three-run homer, ending the night for Blaze starter Osmer Morales (L, 4-6) and pushing the Ports in front, 5-2.
The Blaze would claw one closer in the 7th off Stockton reliever Jared Lyons on three straight singles, but the Blaze would get no closer.
Ramon Morla turned in two of his best innings of the year and Eddie Campbell worked a scoreless 8th, but the 9th became a frame from Hades, as the Ports batted around against Campbell, scoring a touchdown's worth for a 12-3 edge.
Joe DeCarlo mashed a two-run homer in the 9th for the final margin of defeat, his 12th longball of the year.
The loss snaps a nice win streak for the Blaze, but coupled with Visalia's loss, Bakersfield remains 4.0 games ahead in the North with just 8 games remaining (MAGIC NUMBER: 5).
The final regular season homestand in the history of 75-year old Sam Lynn Ballpark CONCLUDES on Sunday at 7:15pm. Please do come out.
