Bethlehem Steel FC Begins August Slate at Richmond
August 3, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Philadelphia Union II News Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After tying the club record with four goals in its last outing, Bethlehem Steel FC looks to build upon the momentum as it begins it's August road trip against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, August 4. Kick off from City Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Steel FC is coming off a 4-1 win over Atlanta United 2, in which Aidan Apodaca, Faris and Brenden Aaronson each tallied their first professional goals. 18-year-old forward Faris and 17-year-old Aaronson also added their first pro assists in the win. For his efforts, Aaronson became the first active member of the Philadelphia Union Academy to receive USL Team of the Week accolades.
"We were happy with the sustained pressure we were able to maintain in the Atlanta game at home," Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke said. "In fact, everything else kind of stemmed from that sustained pressure on the defensive side of it and that's something we have to try and replicate as we try and get three points out of each of the next couple games."
Saturday's match is third and final regular season meeting between Steel FC and the Kickers. Bethlehem Steel FC seeks a sweep of the affair having dominated the two matches at Goodman Stadium by a 7-2 margin. In the most recent matchup back on May 6, Steel FC overcame an early Kickers' goal to battle back for a 3-1 win behind goals from Matt Real, Santi Moar and Chris Nanco.
Despite having recent success against the Kickers, there have been changes made since the two last played with Leigh Cowlishaw having stepped down from the head coach position while defender William Yomby announced his retirement last week.
"There are a few players playing in different positions," Burke said. "Braeden Troyer, for instance, is playing as a holding midfielder at times when he didn't do as much of under Leigh. They are building out of the back consistently which they didn't always do under the old coach. There have been a few adjustments and they are pressing a little higher up the field so there are changes. We haven't look at any older film because there have been adjustments made."
Richmond enters the weekend having claimed one point in its last four matches and coming off back-to-back 3-0 setbacks on the road to Charleston and Pittsburgh. While the club has won only five matches in 2018, four of their wins have come at City Stadium where they have scored 13 of their 19 goals on their home soil. Brian Shriver paces the Kickers' offense, with six goals netted in 20 appearances.
