Bergeron, Cockfield and Bradley take Week 13 Honors
June 29, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Columbus wide receiver/defensive back TROY BERGERON, Columbus wide receiver/defensive back ADRIAN COCKFIELD and Macon Knights defensive specialist MARCUS BRADLEY have been named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 13 of the 2004 season.
BABY RUTH REAL DEAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bergeron (6-2, 180, Middle Tennessee State), in his rookie season, scored six total touchdowns in the Columbus Wardogs' crucial 62-56 victory over the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. Bergeron caught seven passes for 128 yards and five touchdowns while rushing from one yard out for another score. The rushing score stretched the Wardogs' lead to 20 points with just over three minutes left in the game to give Columbus control of the contest. Adding to his totals, he registered four kick returns for 98 yards, including a 53-yard return in the fourth quarter that set up a Tavirus Davis touchdown run. By setting up the Davis touchdown with his kick return, Bergeron either scored or set up every Wardogs touchdown scored after the first five minutes of the contest. The win puts the Wardogs at 6-6, and keeps Columbus in the hunt for their first ever playoff berth. This is the latest point in a season that a Wardog team has held a .500 record. This is the first weekly award for Troy Bergeron.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Cockfield (5-10, 175, Albany State), in his second season, had a big game in Columbus' victory over Oklahoma City as well. The reason Bergeron didn't score during the first five minutes of the game was because Cockfield didn't let him. On the first play of the game Cockfield caught a 35-yard touchdown pass to give the Wardogs an early lead. On the next possession for the Wardogs, Cockfield again scored on the first play of the drive, this time a 30-yard touchdown reception. Cockfield also made his presence felt on defense, intercepting a pass at Columbus' three-yard line late in the second quarter. The Wardogs took the ball and moved down the field for a 14-yard touchdown pass to Bergeron to finish off their scoring in the first half. Cockfield also made three solo tackles during the game. Without the play of Bergeron and Cockfield, the Wardogs couldn't have upended the Yard Dawgz. The last Wardogs player to win a weekly award was Terrence Samuel, who earned U.S. Army Ironman of the Week honors in Week 8 of this season.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bradley (6-0, 197, West Carolina), in his rookie season, scored the game-winning touchdown in the Macon Knights' surprise 43-34 victory over the Florida Firecats on Saturday night. On the evening Bradley registered 6.5 tackles (6UA-1A), to tie him with Damion Purse for a team high on the night. The Knights defense was strong, not allowing Florida to score a single point in the second half to spur the Knights from a ten-point half time deficit to a the victory. Bradley's big play came with one minute left in the game. The Knights had just scored to be within four points of the Firecats. On a third and two the Knights needed a stop to give the ball back to the offense to give them an opportunity to score. Bradley took care of both, intercepting a Ken Mastrole's pass and returning it 16 yards to the endzone to give the Knights the lead. Macon added a late touchdown but it was Bradley's interception that won the game for Macon. This is the first weekly award for Bradley, and the first for a Knights player this season.
