Bennett Named NL East Player of the Month

DURHAM, N.C. - New Jersey right-handed pitcher Joel Bennett was named Tuesday the Rawlings Northern League East Player of the Month for June.

Bennett, a right-hander from Sidney, N.Y., won the East Division award that he also won in June of 2001. He posted a 4-0 record and 1.93 earned run average this June while tossing two complete games. Bennett walked 13 and struck out 59 in 46 2-3 innings. He leads both divisions with 69 strikeouts.

Bennett struck out 16 batters June 23 versus Allentown in 7 2-3 innings. He threw a no-hitter in 1996 for the Newburgh Night Hawks of the Northeast League before it merged with the Northern League in 1999.

In a 12-year professional career, Bennett, 32, pitched two innings for the Baltimore Orioles in 1998 and 17 innings for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1999. He began his stint in New Jersey in 2001.
