Hartford Colonials News Release
EAST HARTFORD, CT - April 25, 2011 - HARTFORD COLONIALS head coach and general manager JERRY GLANVILLE announced BEN NORTON will serve the triple role of offensive line assistant, special teams assistant, and offensive quality control coach for the 2011 United Football League season.
Norton has 17 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, working mostly with offensive linemen, including seven that earned All-American honors. He spent the last four years at Texas State University (2007-10) as assistant head coach, offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator, and helped the Bobcats win the 2008 Southland Conference championship.
Prior to that Norton had a two-year stint at McNeese State as running backs coach in 2005, then had the dual role of offensive coordinator and offensive line coach the following season when the Cowboys won the Southland Conference title.
Norton spent six years at Sam Houston State (1999-2004) as offensive line coach and took on the addition role of assistant head coach during his last three seasons. His offensive line helped protect quarterback JOSH McCOWN as he led the Bearkats to the 2001 Southland Conference title. McCown spent eight seasons in the NFL before playing for the Colonials last year.
"Ben is an outstanding offensive line coach," Glanville said. "He's a demanding teacher and a great person who loves the game."
As offensive line coach at Eastern Illinois for two seasons (1997-98), Norton coached two All-American offensive linemen and five All-Ohio Valley selections. He also assisted in the recruitment of quarterback TONY ROMO.
Norton began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Angelo State in 1994 and worked in the same role at Vanderbilt (1994-95) and LSU (1996).
"Coach Glanville demands an aggressive, physical style of play that has been his trademark throughout his coaching career. I love that," Norton said. "I'm ready to get going and help the Colonials win the UFL championship while learning from Coach Glanville and the knowledgeable, experienced staff that I will have the privilege to work with in Hartford."
Norton, a native of Vidor, TX., lettered four years (1989-92) in football at Stephen F. Austin State in Texas and was a member of the team that played in the 1989 NCAA FSC national championship game. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology/physical science. In 1997 he got his Master of Education degree in health promotion and education from Vanderbilt University.
The UFL begins its third season in August as the Colonials play an eight-game schedule against teams from Las Vegas, Omaha, Sacramento and Virginia. The 2011 schedule will be announced in the coming weeks. Fans can register for tickets for the 2011 Colonials season at www.HartfordColonials.com.
