Bells Storm Back to Defeat Sweets
June 18, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bellingham Bells News Release
The Bellingham Bells have had a flair for the dramatic so far in the 2016 season. That trend continued on Friday evening as the Bells scored seven runs in the top half of the ninth to defeat the Walla Walla Sweets 7-3 at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla.
Trailing 3-0 heading to the top half of the ninth, the Bells once again found the response they needed to win the ballgame late. Mitchell Robinson singled to lead off the threat and moved to third on a Jake Vieth double. After a Danny Casals groundout, Elijah Skipps singled home Robinson to make it 3-1. Matt DiLeo followed with another single to score Vieth and pull the Bells to within one at 3-2. Chase Strumpf walked to load the bases with the Bells trailing by one run and Shane Hanon coming to the plate.
Hanon came through in the clutch for the Bells, ripping a two RBI double off the wall to plate Andru Cardenas, pinch running for Skipps, and DiLeo. Gunnar Schubert followed with a towering triple of his own to score Strumpf and Hanon to increase the Bells advantage to 6-3. Robinson would cap the rally with an RBI sacrifice fly. The Bells lead 7-3 heading to the bottom half of the ninth.
Sam Hellingher shut the door in the ninth for the Bells, earning the save. Josh Zavisubin earned the win, tossing one and two thirds innings and allowing only one run. Tyler Palm pitched two and two thirds striking out two and allowing one run. Joey Matulovich earned the start, fanning eight batters in three and two thirds innings. The pitching staff combined to allow only three runs and strikeout 11 batters.
