Bellingham Bells News Release

Victoria struck first with a run in the 1st. Austin Guibor started things off with a one out double to deep right center. After AJ Alcantara moved him to third with a groundout to the second baseman an error by the shortstop allowed Guibor to score from third. That gave the HarbourCats the early lead at 1-0.

The Bells tied things up with a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st. Andru Cardenas got things started by getting hit by a pitch. Cardenas then took matter into his own hands, he stole second without a throw and then proceeded to steal third a pitch later, and scored on the catcher's high throw to third, to tie the game at 1-1.

The Bells got a couple more runs in the 3rd. Cardenas got things started once again with a double down the line and left and he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Shane Hanon then walked to set up David Banuelos with runners on the corners and Banuelos delivered with a 2 RBI double to deep right center. The game would then move to the 4th with the score at 3-1 Bells.

The Bells tacked on an additional run in the 6th. A one out walk to Danny Casals gave the Bells a baserunner, and with 2 outs Matt Ruff lined a RBI double into the right center gap to score Casals all the way from first. That moved the score to 4-1 Bells after 6.

The HarbourCats tacked on another run in the top of the 7th. A one out single off of the bat of Tommy Jew got things started for the Bells, he was then moved around to third on PJ Floyd's double that was lost in the lights in right. Brad Pluschkell then drove in Jew with a sac fly to center, and the game moved to the bottom of the 7th with the score at 4-2 Bells.

The Bells got the run right back in their half of the 7th. Cardenas once again got things started with a lead off swinging bunt single. After another stolen base and error on the throw by the catcher allowed Cardenas to move to third Danny Casals ripped a double down the left field line for an RBI to move the score to 5-2 Bells.

The Bells started Joey Matulovich on the mound tonight and he was brilliant in his 6 innings. He allowed 1 run that was unearned on 3 hits while striking out 2 and walking only one. His effort was good enough to pick up the win for the Bells. Sam Hellinger entered in the eighth with the bases loaded and 2 out and got out of that jam then pitched a clean ninth to pick up the save for the Bells.

This is a big win for the Bells as it propelled them into first place in the North Division for the second half of the season, putting them in playoff position.

The Bells take the field again tomorrow Saturday July 24th for their second game of the three game series against the Victoria HarbourCats at 7:05. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:35 on 930 AM KBAI with Tom Prizeman. To purchase tickets visit http://bellinghambells.com/home/ or call (367) 527-1035.
