Bellevue University, USL Black Players Alliance and the USL Announce Its Second Scholarship Recipient, Colorado Uplift
November 22, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - Together with the USL Black Players Alliance, United Soccer League today announced that a selected student from the youth nonprofit Colorado UpLift will be awarded a scholarship to Bellevue University, the Official Education Partner of the USL.
Colorado UpLift's mission is to build long-term, life-changing relationships with urban youth and improve the odds for them to become successful and productive young adults. The nonprofit provides programs such as in-school, after-school, adventure, post-secondary and advanced leadership that teach character, life skills and encourage growth in personal development and leadership.
"We look forward to powering a tremendous learning opportunity for a student from Colorado Uplift," said Bellevue University President Mary Hawkins "As part of our remarkable and diverse community of learners, this scholarship recipient will be supported and encouraged as they create a brighter future for themselves."
The United Soccer League has a multi-year partnership with Bellevue University to award scholarships to non-profits that benefit minority youth, with the non-profit organization selecting the scholarship recipient. The scholarship covers full tuition and fees for the completion of the degree. The inaugural recipient in 2021 was Kamaya "Milk" Fuller, who was recommended by Charlotte's Bunk 57 Ministries and Heal Charlotte.
"The USLBPA is grateful to have Bellevue University and USL continue their commitment to creating life changing opportunities for under-served minority youths," said the USL Black Players Alliance's Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu. "Many of our members can attest to the positive and significant impact education has had on their paths both on and off the field. The BPA is excited to work with a partner in Colorado UpLift who have a long history displaying their commitment, dedication, and success in bettering the life outcomes of minority youths. We look forward to meeting and congratulating the eventual deserving recipient of this scholarship award.
"Colorado UpLift aims to break cycles of poverty and foster new generations of urban, community leaders," said Colorado UpLife Advanced Leadership Director Ross Curington. "Bellevue's scholarship contributes to this holistic journey beyond high school graduation by standing in the gap for our future leaders. Together we're creating communities of character & compassion through connection."
Eligible students can apply and submit for the scholarship through Colorado UpLift. Applicants require full-time enrollment. Colorado Uplift will announce the recipient winner in middle of February.
Bellevue University provides full scholarships annually to Championship and League One clubs as well as to league and club employees, coaches, staff and players. Learn more about Bellevue University at www.bellevue.edu.
