As is typical of exhibition games, the Show Me Believers found themselves struggling with turnovers and miscues leading to their 34-13 loss at the hands of the Omaha Beef in a game held in Omaha on Saturday. The Believers trailed 21-0 at the end of the first quarter largely due to an interception returned for a touchdown and a fumble on their own 4 yard line recovered by the Beef.
"We struggled early and made some mental mistakes that caused us problems. Defensively, we held Omaha to 97 yards in total offense and 45 of that came on their first drive. We just helped their cause too much with turnovers." Stated Show Me Believers Head Football Coach, Mike Wyatt.
Justin Peery got the Believers on the board with 1:00 minute to go in the first half when he found Ricky Brown on a 10 yard touchdown pass. Steve Bohlken added the conversion to send the Believers into intermission trailing 21-7.
The Believers waited until late in the fourth quarter for their final score of the game came with 1:10 to go on a 3 yard plunge by quarterback Steve Bohlken. The two point rushing attempt fell short and that would be the final score of the contest.
Both the Believers and Beef used their entire roster of players, taking advantage of the expanded roster for the pre-season game
Turning in top performances for the Believers defense were linemen Brandon Stoker, Mario Ivy, Rob Akindele, and Derek Chance. The secondary also demonstrated exceptional play, led by C. J. Jones, Brandon Gregory, Andy Peterson, and Rob Findley, who picked off a Beef pass attempt in the end zone to thwart a fourth quarter scoring opportunity for the hosts.
" Both teams defenses looked solid, and both struggled on offense. But, the good news is that the problems we had are all correctable. We just have to get those corrections made in short order, as we open the season in two weeks." Added Wyatt..
The Believers open their 2004 season on March 14 in an Atlantic Conference North division game in Ft. Wayne.
