New Britain Bees News Release
(New Britain, CT) - The New Britain Bees (26-27) defeated the Atlantic League's Road Warriors (12-40) 5-4 at New Britain Stadium on Saturday evening and have now taken the first two games of the three-game weekend series in the Hardware City. The Bees improve to 16-15 in their home ballpark on the 2018 campaign, marking the first time that they are above the breakeven point at New Britain Stadium since May 8th.
New Britain starting pitcher Mark Hamburger (5-4) was victorious as he gave up three unearned runs on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out five and tossing a wild pitch. The right-hander collects his team-best seventh quality start in ten appearances on the mound. Road Warriors starting pitcher Kelvin Villa (1-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits (one home run) over six innings pitched, walking five and striking out three. Evan Scribner struck out the side in the top half of the ninth inning for his team-leading seventh save of the season and second in as many nights.
New Britain took a 3-0 lead against Villa in the bottom half of the first inning on an RBI double off the bat of Darren Ford that plated Vinny Siena after he also reached by way of a two-base hit to leadoff the rally and a two RBI single produced by the red-hot Brock Stassi, that allowed Ford and Romero to cross the plate after Romero was intentionally walked just two batters before Stassi stepped into the box. The Bees made it 4-0 in their favor in the middle of the fourth when Jonathan Galvez launched a one-out solo home run to left again versus Villa, his fifth roundtripper of the year. The Road Warriors scored three times in the top of the seventh to get to with a single run at 4-3, but New Britain went on top 5-3 in the home half of the seventh when Stassi drove home Romero with a two-out base knock to put the Bees back out in front by a pair of runs. The visitors did not go down without a fight as they cut the deficit to 5-4 heading into the top of the ninth, but no comeback was in the cards as Scribner dominated the Road Warriors batters with a nasty curveball and tremendous velocity on his fastball, striking out Edwin Gomez, Isaac Wenrich, and Matt Hibbert. Stassi, Galvez, and James Skelton led the offensive attack with a pair of hits each, with Stassi having now registered seven hits in 12 at bats in three games played in a New Britain uniform, including three doubles, a triple, and seven runs batted in.
