Bees Win in Extras to Win Game One

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Burlington Bees have taken a one-game lead in the Midwest League western division championship series by defeating Cedar Rapids 4-2 in 11 innings Saturday night. Nick Van Stratten hit a two-run triple in the 11th inning to secure the win for the Bees.

Cedar Rapids got on the scoreboard first Saturday night by scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth when the Bees scored one run. Nick Francis led the inning off by hitting a homerun to left field to tie the game. The tie did not last long as the Kernels scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a one-run lead once again.

The Bees trailed 2-1 going into the ninth inning but scored a run in the top of the frame to tie the game. Clint Robinson was walked to lead the inning off and then replaced on the base paths by pinch-runner Juan Rivera. Van Stratten then came to the plate and was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs. Rivera then stole third base with Francis at the place. Francis bounced into a double play, but it scored Rivera and tied the ballgame.

The score remained tied as the game went to extra innings. In the top of the 11th innings, the Bees scored the final two runs to take their first lead of the game. Mike Moustaks led the inning off by walking and ten moved to second on a balk. After an out was recorded, Jamar Walton was intentially walked to put runners on at first and second. Van Stratten then tripled, which scored both runners and the Bees led 4-2.

Kelvin Herrera got the start for the Bees. In six innings, he allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Brent Fisher pitched four innings allowing no runs on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Fisher also was awarded the win. Zach Peterson pitched a perfect ninth with a strikeout to pick up his first save of the post-season.

The Bees were outhit 8-7. Only Kyle Martin had more than one hit as he went 2-4. Van Stratten was the only Bee with multiple RBI as he drove in the two runs with his triple.

The Bees return home to Community Field for the rest of the Midwest League western division championship series. Game two of the series is scheduled for 2:00 Sunday afternoon.
