February 19, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees recorded three power play goals for the second consecutive game to defeat the Corpus Christi Rayz 3-2 Thursday night at the Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi.

Defenseman Kevin Mackie led off the game's scoring for the Bees with a 4-on-3 power play goal with 8:33 remaining in the first period. Mackie's goal came on a slap shot from the point just ten seconds into the Bees power play, as Corpus Christi's Byron Pool was serving a minor penalty for slashing.

The Rayz tied the game 1-1 with 9:31 remaining in the second period with a power play goal of their own. Corpus Christi's Paul Dunphy fired a slap shot into traffic from the right-point, which tipped off of Ken Richardson's stick and snuck past Bees netminder Jacque Vezina. The goal ended Vezina's series shutout sequence against Corpus Christi at 102:32. The Bees fired 18 shots on goal, but could not get anything past Rayz goaltender Greg Hewitt. His performance kept the Rayz in the contest.

Rio Grande Valley regained the lead 1:46 into the period with a power play goal by Troy Linna. Bees forward Matic Kralj started the play by leading the puck into the attack zone with two Rayz defenders draped on him. He was able to work the puck towards Hewitt, and Hewitt got tangled up with traffic attempting to cover up the puck. Before he could cover it, Linna crashed in and cashed in by knocking the puck away from Hewitt and into the net. Kralj would get one of his own, completing the power play trifecta 6:14 into the period, as he skated in front with the puck and wrested a shot into the top shelf. Rayz forward Paul Dunphy scored to put the Rayz behind 3-2, making the game a one-goal game, but it was too little too late as only five seconds remained.

The Bees out-shot the Rayz 46-23 and went 3 for 8 on the power play in the contest. Rio Grande Valley now sits just 6 standing-points behind the Amarillo Gorillas, who are ranked third in the Southern Conference, and move 11 standing-points ahead of the Austin Ice Bats. The Bees return home to the Dodge Arena for a pair of home games, hosting Austin on Friday and Corpus Christi on Saturday.
