Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa (7/4/12) - The Burlington Bees' (40-42, 8-5) struggles in Peoria continued as they lost their fifth consecutive game in Peoria on Wednesday night. The Peoria Chiefs (39-43, 4-9) pulled away late and beat the Bees 8-to-2 on Independence Day.
The final score didn't reflect how evenly matched the two teams were during the first seven-and-a-half innings. Drew Granier came into the game following his second worst start of the season when he pitched only 3.2 innings in Kane County and allowed ten hits and seven earned runs.
Things looked rough early in the game after Granier allowed a solo home run to Dustin Geiger in the bottom of the first to give the Chiefs a 1-to-0 lead. But Granier eventually settled down and did not al- low another hit until the bottom of the sixth.
By that point the Bees had scored a couple times and give Granier a lead. Eliezer Mesa tied the game when he hit a two-out RBI in the top of the third that scored Nick Rickles. Mesa came into the game as arguably the Bees' most clutch performer; he was hitting .367 with runners in scoring posi- tion before the game. Mesa's base hit gave him a total of 24 RBIs with the Bees this year.
The Bees scored again when Douglas Landaeta smacked a two-out, solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the sixth. Landaeta's team-leading ninth home run gave the Bees a brief 2-to-1 lead.
Granier had amassed a 10.38 ERA when working in the sixth inning before Wednesday's start and experienced some more trouble in game one. He allowed another home run to Dustin Geiger - a two- run home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to give the Chiefs a 3-to-2 lead.
The game got away from the Bees in the eighth when Jose Macias allowed five earned runs to let the Chiefs take an 8-to-2 lead. The Bees couldn't come back and Granier (9-5) took his fifth loss after pitching seven innings with eight strikeouts and only one walk, four hits and three earned runs.
The Bees have actually lost six consecutive games in Peoria dating back to the 2011 season. They look to force a rubber match in game three by winning game two on Thursday night. Game two starts at 7 p.m. For more information on Bees baseball call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
