New Britain Bees News Release
(New Britain, Conn.) - New Britain Bees team officials today announced the signing of power hitting first baseman Jon Griffin. Griffin's Atlantic League rights were acquired via trade with the Long Island Ducks in exchange for pitcher Dan Blewitt. Following the swap, the team immediately signed the slugger to the first contract in New Britain Bees history.
"Jon is an accomplished power hitter and fielder," said Bees manager Stan Cliburn. "He is a great first step in putting together a strong team for 2016. Fans in Central Connecticut are going to enjoy watching him and we're excited to have him."
The 6'6" right-handed swinging 26-year-old hit a team-high 13 home runs for Long Island in 2015, earning Atlantic League All-Star honors along the way. The Bradenton, Florida native also flashed a solid glove at first base, logging a .994 fielding percentage. In 2014, Griffin was a Southern League All-Star at the Double-A level as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. That season, he clubbed 15 home runs despite playing in a notorious pitchers' park in Mobile, Alabama. Additionally, Griffin is known for setting a league record, hitting home runs in five (5) consecutive at bats for the BayBears.
Originally drafted in the 21st round by the Diamondbacks out of the University of Central Florida, Griffin is a career .264 hitter with 84 home runs, 333 RBI and a .990 fielding percentage in five professional seasons.
The New Britain Bees are a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and will begin their inaugural season of play at New Britain Stadium on April 21. For further information or to become a season ticket holder, email info@nbbees.com, call 860-826-BEES (2337), or visit NBBees.com.
