New Britain Bees News Release
(New Britain, CT) - The York Revolution (18-15) defeated the New Britain Bees (14-23) 5-3 at New Britain Stadium on Wednesday night to take the rubber game of a three-game series in the Constitution State.
Bees starting pitcher Kyle Simon (3-3) suffered the loss, tossing seven innings and allowing four earned runs on ten hits while striking out five batters and walking one. York's Luke Westphal (1-1) secured York's second straight win, tossing an inning and a third of scoreless and hitless relief, fanning a batter. Grant Sides earned his second save of the season, retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth inning.
York jumped on Simon with no hesitation in the top of the first as Jared Mitchell slapped a single on Simon's first pitch and came around to score on a two-run home run from Michael Burgess as the visitors jumped on top 2-0 after a half inning of play. The combo of Mitchell and Burgess proved deadly again in the third frame, as Mitchell led the inning off with an infield single and plated another run off a Burgess RBI base knock. Down 3-0 in the bottom of the third, the Bees began their rally, as Darren Ford blasted a double off York starting pitcher Joe Van Meter, and Reid Brignac broke New Britain's scoring seal with a single that scored Ford. In the bottom of the fifth, Jonathan Galvez led the inning off with a double and came around to cross the plate by way of a James Skelton infield single that hugged the first base line, extending Skelton's on-base streak to 11 consecutive games overall. Two doubles on a pair of pitches off the bats of Jamar Walton and Josh Thole in the bottom of the sixth tied the game up at three. The deadlock wouldn't last for long as Mitchell once again laced a two-out single, followed by an RBI double into right field off the bat of Alexi Casilla to help York regain the edge 4-3. The Revs added an insurance run in the top of the eighth for a 5-3 cushion off Bees reliever Mike Hepple, who walked Burgess to start the inning, while Jose Cuevas followed with a double that scored Burgess. In the final three innings offensively for the Bees, the team mustered together just two singles which was not enough to overcome the deficit. Thole led the way for the Bees on offense with three hits and an RBI. Photo provided courtesy of Megan Murnane.
