
Bees Hold off Kernels

(Cedar Rapids, IA) Bees' starting pitcher Ryan Etsell struck out career high 10 hitters as the Bees were able to fend off a late charge by the Cedar Rapids Kernels to take game one 7-6 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
Angel Rosa gave the Bees a 2-0 lead in the first with a double to center scoring Chad Hinshaw and Mike Fish. Rosa later came around to score on a Kernels' error and the Bees led 3-0 after one.
Cedar Rapids cut the Bees' lead to one in the third inning. Joel Licon came around to score on a failed run down, to put the Kernels on the board. Mitch Garver singled up the middle scoring Engelb Vielma to make the score 3-2.
The Bees began to build there lead thanks to big run producing triples by both Brandon Bayardi and Mike Fish. Erick Salcedo also singled in a run as the Bees' lead grew to 7-2.
Cedar Rapids scored four times in the eighth inning. Bryan Haar tripled with the bases loaded and later came around to score on a Jason Kanzler single and the Bees' lead was cut to one at 7-6.
Bees' closer Alan Busenitz was able to shut the door and the Bees hung on 7-6. Bees' starter Ryan Etsell (4-1) went seven innings allowing just two runs on six hits and struck out a career high ten, earning the win. Kernels' starter Josue Montanez (1-3) was charged with the loss. Alan Busenitz (6) earned the save.
The Burlington Bees (27-27) will continue their series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels (26-30) Sunday at 2:00 PM. Clint Sharp takes the mound for the Bees against Kohl Stewart for Cedar Rapids.
