Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
RIO GRANDE VALLEY 4
LAREDO 3
Killer Bees forward Ryan Shmyr tallied his first goal of the season 3:37 into the third period and it stood as the difference, giving Shmyr his first professional regular season game winning goal and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees a 4-3 victory over the Laredo Bucks at the Laredo Entertainment Center Wednesday night to extend the Killer Bees winning streak to four games.
The Killer Bees opened the contest with three goals in a season high span of 1:30, as Justin Van Parys, Matic Kralj and Bill Newson built a 3-0 lead 5:30 into the contest. The Bucks mounted a comeback limiting the Killer Bees to just one shot on goal in the final 10:00 of the first period and one shot on goal in the entire second period. The Killer Bees were limited to one shot on goal during the second period, as they spent most of the period shorthanded after being whistled with 5 consecutive minor penalties. The Bees killed off the first three power play opportunities, but the Bucks capitalized on the final two with power play goals by Patrik Nilson and Jeff Bess.
Shmyr's goal in the third period, off a redirection from Bill Newson's shot from the right point, gave the Bees a 4-2 lead, until J.F. David scored for the Bucks with 7:41 remaining to cut the Bees lead back to one. The Bucks continued putting on pressure and eventually pulled starting goaltender Marco Emond with 1:15 remaining for the extra attacker, but Jeff Levy sealed the door shut the rest of the way to give the Killer Bees the win. Levy stopped 34 of 37 shots to earn the game's number-1 star honor, as the Bucks out-shot the Bees in the game 37-17.
The win gives the Bees a 7-4-2 overall record, including a 5-0-0 record when scoring first and a 4-0-0 record when leading after the second period of play. The loss by Laredo ended a streak of 14 consecutive home games without a regulation loss. The Bees now prepare to host the Corpus Christi Rayz Friday and San Angelo Saturday at the Dodge Arena.
