PEORIA, Ill. - The Burlington Bees (60-60, 28-23) took advantage of four errors by the Peoria Chiefs (54-66, 19-32) to earn a 5-to-1 victory on Wednesday night. The win helped the Bees remain only three games back of first and maintain control of the wild card spot in the West.

Tanner Peters gave the Bees a strong performance from the mound in game one. The right-hander pitched five innings and only allowed two hits and three walks. Peters only allowed the Chiefs to reach scoring position twice in the first half of the game. He also had eight strikeouts, which matched a career-high he set on July 13 this year.

The Bees offense supported Peters with five runs in the first three innings. The club jumped on the board in the top of the first inning after Sean Jamieson reached on a fielding error by Peoria's right-fielder. In fact, the Bees' All-Star shortstop made it to second base when Oliver Zapata dropped the ball. Douglas Landaeta yanked the next pitch into left field for an RBI double that scored Jamieson and gave the Bees a 1-to-0 lead in the first.

The Bees pulled away in the third inning scored four runs in the top of the third. The Chiefs hit Aaron Shipman to start the inning and Bobby Crocker followed with a single. Douglas Landaeta hit a soft line drive to the short, but Wes Darvill mishandled the ball, which let Shipman score.

The Bees led 2-to-0 before Wade Kirkland drove a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall for a three-run home run to give to break the game open. Kirkland's seventh home run also gave him a total of 51 RBIs, which is the most by any member of the Bees' roster this year.

Peters (2-4) eventually earned his second win with the Bees after reaching the fifth inning for the sixth con- secutive start.

The Bees led 5-to-0 before Nate Eppley allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh. But the one run was a mere blemish in an otherwise strong performance by the Bees' pitching staff. Eppley and Raul Alcantara com- bined for four innings out of the pen and helped the Bees hold on to their lead for a 5-to-1 victory.

Chris Lamb (1-2) takes the hill on Thursday night for the second game of the three-game series. First pitch of game two is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
