Burlington Bees News Release
South Bend, IN (Sep 13, 2008) - Due to heavy rains caused by the weather system that is currently covering much of the country, the rest of the Midwest League championship series has been cancelled. With a 2-0 lead in the series, the Bees have been named Midwest League champions for 2008.
With various instructional and fall leagues approaching quickly and no foreseeable end in sight to the rain fall, the decision was made to cancel the rest of the series. The Bees took the first two games of the series against South Bend by a combined score of 18-0 and allowed just five total hits. The Bees also had a perfect playoff record of 6-0.
The Bees' season comes to an end after they went from being the worst team in the division in the first half to winning the second half by 3.5 games. The Bees' final regular season record was 73-65. The team played its best baseball in the final month of the season. Including the playoffs, the Bees had a record of 27-9 since the start of August.
This is the first Midwest League championship for the Bees since 1999 and their fourth overall. The Bees will be arriving back to Community Field this afternoon between 3 and 4. Fans are invited to come to Community Field to welcome home the 2009 Midwest League champions. Midwest League championship merchandise will be arriving to the Bees' team store soon.
