
Beech, Bucks blank Bats: win ninth straight

AUSTIN, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League shutout the Austin Ice Bats 4-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 1,900 fans at the Chaparral Ice Arena Sunday afternoon. With the win the Bucks improved to 9-0 to start the season, while extending their best start in team history. Laredo is now 6-0 on the road-another team record.
Rookie Kevin Beech notched his second shutout of the season, stopping all 19 Ice Bats shots he faced. Laredo now has four shutouts in their first nine games, they had four shutouts all last season.
Laredo (9-0-0, 18pts) took a 1-0 lead just 1:06 into the game as reigning CHL player of the week Jeff Bes continued his hot start, as he scored his seventh goal of the season for the Bucks from the left circle off of a nice feed from James Hiebert. Steve Simoes also picked up an assist on the goal. The Bucks then made it 1-0 as Paul Elliott scored his first goal of the season, sending a slap-shot from the point in on the power-play making it 2-0 Laredo. Bes and Carnegie picked up assists.
Laredo opened up their lead in the second period just 1:25 in as Bes notched his second goal of the game. Adam Rivet and Simoes picked up assists. The Bucks made it 4-0 at the 12:20 mark of the second when Chris Korchinski sent a shot in from the right side of the crease. It was Korchinski's fifth goal of the season. Brent MacSween and Carnegie were given assists on the goal.
The two teams combined for 102 penalty minutes, with each team picking up 51. Laredo is off until Friday, November 9th when they host division foe Corpus Christi at 7:30pm.
Austin falls to 2-7 on the season.
