
Bedard Records Hat Trick As Icehawks Skate To 7-2 Win Over Lumberjacks

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks opened 2010 in a big way on Saturday and defeated the Muskegon Lumberjacks 7-2 to take sole possession of first place in the International Hockey League standings. The Icehawks extend their home winning streak to a league high ten games with the win.
Rookie left wing Mickael Bedard recorded his second hat trick this week to lead Port Huron to victory. Bedard, who also dished out two assists tonight, scored all three of his goals on the power play. The reigning IHL Player of the Week, Bedard also had a hat trick in the Icehawks win over Dayton on Sunday.
He had some help from linemate Derek Patrosso, who tallied one goal and three assists, and rookie defenseman Mike Gershon, who added a goal and two assists. Goalie Larry Sterling turned aside 31 shots to earn his seventh consecutive win.
The Icehawks entered the third period with a one goal advantage and poured on four goals in the final frame to take a commanding lead. Despite being outshot in the first two periods, the Icehawks outshot the Lumberjacks 16-6 in the third stanza.
The Icehawks opened the third with a goal off the stick of Brandon Naurato at 3:14. Daniel Tetrault assisted. Port Huron continued to increase their lead as the period went on, soaring ahead with Bedard's third of the night at 10:49 and goals just 23 seconds apart from Nick Lindberg and Patrosso at 14:18 and 14:41. Lindberg's goal was unassisted, while Patrosso's was assisted by Bedard and Rouleau.
The Lumberjacks began the second period on the power play and capitalized with an Adam Welch goal at 1:05 to tie the game 2-2. Matt Krug and Damian Surma assisted. The Icehawks regained the lead at 8:22 on a goal from Gershon. Bedard and Patrosso assisted. The Lumberjacks outshot the Icehawks 13-10 in the second.
The Icehawks emerged from the first period with a 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of power play goals from Bedard. The rookie scored at 7:15 on assists from Pete Rouleau and Jamie Lovell and again at 15:42 on assists from Patrosso and Gershon. The Lumberjacks cut the score to 2-1 with a goal by Robin Bouchard at 18:22. He was assisted by Russ Smith. The Lumberjacks outshot the Icehawks 14-9 in the first.
The Icehawks outshot their opponent 35-33 overall. Lumberjacks goalie Sebastien Centomo suffered the loss with 28 saves on 35 shots. The Icehawks were 3-8 on the power play and the Lumberjacks were 1-3.
