Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks won their second straight game and remained perfect at McMorran Arena (4-0-0-0) with a 4-3 shootout victory over the first place Bloomington PrairieThunder on Friday.
Mikael Bedard scored on the final shot of the shootout to give the Icehawks a 2-1 advantage and the win. Port Huron's Nick Lindberg and Bloomington's Craig MacDonald traded goals prior to Bedard's game winner, which moved Port Huron (5-1-0-0) to within one point of the Thunder in the IHL early season standings.
The game began on a wild note with Port Huron's Jason Kostadine and Bloomington's Robin Gomez fighting just 55 seconds into the contest. That scrap was followed up when the Icehawks Mike Bray fought PrairieThunder defenseman Matt Smith at 2:29. The two fights opened the floodgates to a hectic period that featured five goals scored between the teams.
Nick Lindberg punched a rebound over the pad of goalie Paulo Colaiacovo and into the net at 6:36 to give Port Huron a 1-0 advantage. Cory Stillman and Derek Patrosso earned assists on the play. Stillman added to the Port Huron lead at 8:51 when his wrist shot from the left circle found room between the legs of Colaiacovo to make it 2-0. Patrosso again assisted on the play along with Mike Gershon.
Bloomington battled back to tie the score on back-to-back goals from Craig MacDonald and Justin Sawyer at 10:39 and 17:17 respectively. Jamie Carroll and Matt Frick had assists on the first goal and Ryan Finnerty helped set up the tying goal.
The tie lasted just 54 seconds as Tab Lardner found the back of the net at 18:09 on a centering feed from Mike Kinnie. Adam Maccarone also had a helper on the play giving Port Huron a 3-2 lead after one period.
Andrew Martin replaced Colaiacovo in the Bloomington net to start the second period, which ended without a goal and saw the home team kill off four Bloomington power play chances.
Finnerty tied the game at 14:14 of the third period on a goal mouth scramble forcing the contest into overtime. Bill Bagron and Brian Boulay assisted the goal. Neither team scored in the five minute overtime leading up to the shootout heroics by Bedard.
A rematch is scheduled for the two teams on Saturday night at McMorran Arena. Single game tickets for all Icehawks home games are on sale now at the McMorran Arena Box Office, any Ticket Master location or by phone. For more information, visit www.porthuronicehawks.com or call 810-966-3800.
