Beckley Native Metrick Returns to Miners for 2018 Season
Pitcher Chris Metrick, who has already logged two prior successful seasons with the West Virginia Miners, as well as a record-setting career at West Virginia Wesleyan, has agreed to return to the Miners in 2018. The team announced on May 23 that the Beckley native will wear the Miners color for a third straight summer Prospect League season.
The right hander's previous two summers at Linda K. Epling Stadium have been both productive and memorable as he enters the '18 campaign in third place in two career categories in Miners' franchise history: appearances (40) and saves (10).
Following a 2016 Prospect League season with the Miners that saw him have a 1.62 earned run average in 21 games that totaled 33.1 innings pitched, Metrick drastically raised the bar last summer by logging a perfect 4-0 record that saw him strike out 38 batters in 27.0 innings of work. This resulted in him lowering his ERA last summer to a very stingy mark of 1.33.
The Beckley native recently completed a stellar collegiate career at West Virginia Wesleyan College with a senior season that resulted in him completing his eligibility as the school's record holder in career saves. His outstanding 2018 collegiate season saw him collect NCBWA Division II Atlantic Region first team honors as well being named to the 2018 All-Mountain East Conference first team. He also carried his commitment to excellence into the classroom as he was selected as 2018 "Scholar Athlete of the Year" at Wesleyan.
The Prospect League is the premier collegiate wood bat summer baseball league in the Midwest. It has been operating in its current form since 2009 while serving the summer baseball needs of top collegiate players. The West Virginia Miners, who play at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, WV, have been a member of the league since the beginning of the 2010 season. The team has reached the postseason playoffs in seven of their eight seasons in the Prospect League to date. These seven postseason appearances have included five trips to the league championship final series with three of the trips resulting with the Miners being crowned as Prospect League Champions (2012, 2013, 2016).
Season-long box seats and other ticket packages for the West Virginia Miners are already on sale for the 2018 Prospect League season. Persons needing more information on the Miners can contact the team either by e-mail at [email protected] or by telephone at 304-252-SAFE (7233).
