Buffalo Beauts News Release
Buffalo, N.Y. - The Buffalo Beauts captured their seventh straight victory on Saturday as they opened up the final weekend of the regular season with a 5-2 win over the Connecticut Whale.
The victory marked the fourth and final matchup of the season between the Beauts and the Whale. Buffalo swept the season series, winning all four games and outscoring the Whale by a combined score of 19-3 in those games.
Annika Zalewski wasted no time opening up the scoring with a quick wrist shot from the right of the goal just over two minutes into the game. Zalewski added a pair of assists by the end of the night, leading the Beauts with three points in the contest.
Taylor Accursi and Julianna Iafallo added two more goals for the Beauts in the first period as part of each of their multi-point nights, lifting the Beauts to an early 3-0 lead. Emily Pfalzer chipped in two assists of her own in a multi-point outing.
Buffalo's win improved their record to 10-1-0 on the season when scoring the game's first goal. They also improved to 10-1-0 when leading after the first period.
Corrine Buie and former Connecticut captain Kelly Babstock found the back of the net in the second and third periods, respectively to increase Beauts' lead to five goals before the Whale tallied a single time. Babstock's goal marked her second in four games against her former team.
Shannon Doyle and Rachael Ade got the Whale on the board in the third period, but Connecticut's late-game push wasn't enough to climb back against the Beauts. Buffalo was backstopped by Nicole Hensley, who turned in an 18-save effort to earn her fourth straight win and improve to 5-1-0 for the season.
Following Doyle's power play tally to break the shutout, Buffalo's penalty kill became a focal point in the third period. The Whale found themselves with four more power-play opportunities, but the Beauts' penalty killers shut the door, killing off the final four of Connecticut's five power plays on the night.
The Beauts will play their final game of the regular season on the road tomorrow on Sunday, March 3, when they face off against the Metropolitan Riveters at RWJ Barnabas Health Hockey House. Puck drop is at 3 p.m.
With tonight's win, the Beauts head into their final game with the opportunity to clinch home-ice advantage in the first round of the Isobel Cup Playoffs. A win would guarantee Buffalo one of the top two seeds in the playoffs and would earn the Beauts at least one home game in the postseason.
