Bears Start Homestand With a Win

July 13, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL) - Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears defeated the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 5-2 Wednesday night at Yakima County Stadium in the first game of a five-game series between the two teams. Yakima improved to 8-18 on the season and 5-5 at home.

After the Volcanoes scored a pair of runs in the second inning, the Bears pitching staff clamped down with seven scoreless innings. Starter Brad Wilson tied a season-high with seven strikeouts in his longest start of the season, as he lasted seven innings. Wilson gave up two runs on six hits and four walks on the way to his first win of 2011.

The Bears offense scored a run thanks to an errant throw by the Volcanoes catcher in the third inning. Steve Rodriguez led-off the inning with a single, moved to second on a Westley Moss single, then stole third and came home on that error.

The fifth inning was the big inning for the Bears offensively. Danny Pulfer reached on a single to start, but was still only at second once the second out of the inning was recorded. Raul Navarro hit a single to drive in Pulfer and tie the game. After Carter Bell was hit by a pitch and joined Navarro on the bases, Zach Jones hit a double that plated both base runners.

Drew Zizinia tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning for the Bears and the offense added another run when Jimmy Comerota hit a double after a Bell triple led-off the inning. In the ninth, Evan Marshall retired all three batters he faced on strikeouts for his second save of the season.

Every Bears batter that came to the plate had at least one hit, as the Bears outhit the Volcanoes 10-6. In his first professional game, Carter Bell went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.

The Volcanoes committed the only error of the game, while the Bears defense turned three double plays.

The Bears have now won three-straight home games and continue the current homestand Thursday night. First pitch at Yakima County Stadium is scheduled for 7:05. The Bears will send right-handed pitcher Teo Gutierrez to the hill as the starter to face Volcanoes starter Brandon Allen, who is also a right-handed pitcher.
