Bears fall to Pride in 11

NEWARK, N.J. - Nashua's Chop Pough hit a solo home run in the top of the 11th inning to propel the visiting Pride to a 5-4 extra-inning over the Newark Bears in Atlantic League action held Tuesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Newark (3-2) opened the scoring in its first at-bat as Wil Quintana grounded out to drive in Jack Santora. Nashua (4-1) tied the game up in its ensuing at-bat on a Pough single to left field. The Bears broke the 1-1 tie in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field by Danny Clyburn which plated Henderson. Newark's advantage was short-lived however as Nashua's Curtis Pride cracked a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give his team a 3-2 lead. Newark tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on Al Benjamin's sacrifice fly to deep centerfield which allowed Tom Hage to score. One batter later, Newark forged ahead on Jason Torres' RBI single through the right side of the infield, scoring Danny Clyburn. The Pride then knotted the score at four as Pough's solo home run to left center wound up sending the game into extra innings.

For the game, Newark was outhit 11-5 while the Pride committed three errors as compared to the one miscue turned in by the home team. Pough led the way for Nashua with three hits while Pride and Damian Sapp each had two. The Bears stranded 13 runners while the Pride left seven men on base. Tom Stepka (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Bears while Nashua's David Rollandini (1-0) was the winner and Johnny Ruffin picked up his second save of the young season. Newark starter Matt Wagner turned in a strong performance in his second no-decision of 2003, striking out four and walking one in seven solid innings.

Newark and Nashua continue their three-game mid-week series tomorrow afternoon at 12:05 p.m. with the Bears' Jose Lima (1-0) opposing the Pride's Paxton Crawford (1-0). Tomorrow afternoon is the first of Newark's five Businessperson's Specials as well as a School Day.
