Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release
ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Chesapeake Bayhawks announced a second consecutive successful outcome of their breast cancer awareness helmet auction today according to owner and head coach Brendan Kelly. The team wore pink helmets in their game vs. the Long Island Lizards on July 23rd. After the game, each player signed their helmet and they were auctioned off with the proceeds benefiting Save the Coconuts. The auction raised over $6,000 for breast cancer awareness, which surpassed the 2010 auction by almost $1,000.
"The big thank you goes to our fans for their support in helping the Bayhawks raise money for breast cancer awareness" Kelly stated. "As a community-first organization, we have always prided ourselves on giving back and making a difference. We started this tradition last year and we hope to continue it in the years to come."
Save the Coconuts is an organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness to fight breast cancer in our local area and throughout the country. The organization was formed in 2008 from one of the teams participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, 60-Mile Walk in Washington DC. After completing the walk, the group evolved into a non-profit dedicated to raising funds to benefit the local Annapolis and Anne Arundel County organizations that help men and women who are living with breast cancer.
"Save the Coconuts is grateful to the Bayhawks for their generous contribution to the Coconuts and for the continued support of our programs," Save the Coconuts steering committee member Pam Finlay said.
As a result of local support, Save the Coconuts has donated over $250,000 so far to various organizations that share their passion. Save the Coconuts is an all volunteer organization - to learn more about the group, please visit www.savethecoconuts.org.
The Bayhawks travel to Rochester on Saturday, August 6th to battle the Rattlers at 7pm. The game will be aired live on Comcast SportsNet and ESPN3.com. Chesapeake returns home for their last game of the 2011 regular season on August 13th when they take on the Denver Outlaws. Come early for the Bud Light Tailgate and stay after the game for the post-game fireworks! Don't miss out on all the fun at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
