Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release
Boston, MA (June 25, 2004) - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premiere professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced that the Baltimore Bayhawks-Long Island Lizards game scheduled to be played at Mitchel Field this evening has been postponed due to severe weather. The game has been rescheduled for July 2 at 7:30 p.m. The contest will still be played at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y.
Next week's meeting will be the first match-up between the two since the 2003 New Balance Major League Lacrosse Championship Game. The Lizards won that thriller-and their second title-on a Kevin Lowe goal in overtime. The two squads have been the dominant forces in the MLL for the last three seasons, meeting in all three championship games. Long Island holds a 2-1 advantage in post-season play, but the two have evenly split their regular season series at three wins apiece.
Both teams enter this game on an upswing and with identical 3-2 records. The Bayhawks overcame a recordtying 31 saves by Greg Cattrano of the Philadelphia Barrage to win their Week Five contest, 19-18. It was the first MLL game in 2004 to go into overtime, in which Baltimore player-coach Gary Gait notched the game-winner. Gait, who finished the evening with four goals and three assists, was named MLL Offensive Player of the Week. The Lizards visited Boston last week and took home their first win in three meetings with the Cannons.
Goalie Brian Dougherty matched Cattrano's record-tying total of 31 saves, but he came away with a 19-16 win and was named MLL Co-Defensive Player of the Week. The loss spoiled Boston's perfect record and left Long Island on the heels of the division leaders.
