Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - A two-out rally in the bottom of the third produced five runs, and the BayBears never looked back as they topped the Tennessee Smokies, 6-3, in game one of the Southern League Championship Series on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Tennessee (3-1) starter Marco Carrillo (0-1) retired the first six batters that he faced until Marc Krauss cracked a lead-off double against him in the third. Carrillo bounced back with a pair of strikeouts before he hit Adam Eaton and walked Jake Elmore to extend the inning for A.J. Pollock.
Pollock took the count to 3-2 before he bounced a base hit past shortstop Junior Lake into left field, plating Krauss and Eaton. Ryan Wheeler followed with a three-run smash to left-center as the BayBears (4-2) picked up a 5-1 cushion.
Patrick Corbin (1-1) surrendered a solo homer to Jae-Hoon Ha in the top of the first and a two-run blast to pinch-hitter Ty Wright in the fifth inning. Otherwise, Corbin was solid in six frames as he surrendered five hits while punching out three.
Krauss crushed a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to put the BayBears up by five. Clay Zavada picked up Corbin with a perfect seventh. Billy Spottiswood hung a zero in the eighth while Evan Marshall (S, 1) worked around a couple of singles to finish the contest.
The BayBears carry a 1-0 series lead into game two of the Southern League Championship Series on Thursday night from "The Hank" as right-hander Jarrod Parker (11-8) tosses for the BayBears against southpaw Brooks Raley (8-10). Thursday's contest begins at 7:05 p.m., and it will be a Thirsty Thursday with $2 Buds and Pepsi available from 6 to 8 p.m.
