Mobile BayBears News Release
JACKSON, Tenn. - After Rusty Ryal saved the game in the bottom of the ninth with a great defensive play, it was ultimately his throwing error in the 10th inning that finished the comeback for the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx in a 6-5 BayBears loss.
It was all BayBears (18-23) early as a scoreless tie was broken in the fourth on an RBI single by Cyle Hankerd, bringing home Cesar Nicolas. Bryan Byrne lined a double to right with two outs in the fifth inning to score Greg Thomson, making it 2-0.
Brooks Brown had his best outing of the season for the BayBears as he worked into the seventh for the first time this year while shutting out the Diamond Jaxx (25-16) on five hits. Brown left the game with two outs in the seventh and his team leading 3-0. An RBI double by Frank Curreri and a passed ball allowing Hankerd to score made it 5-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth. With one out and one on, West Tenn drew four consecutive walks to score their first two runs. A two-run single by Mark Kiger pulled the Jaxx within 5-4.
Vince Bongiovanni was an out away from a ninth-inning save when Marshall Hubbard lined a triple past a diving Chris Rahl in center field to bring home the tying run. West Tenn would have won the game when Adam Moore hit a grounder to the right side, but Ryal ranged far to his left to keep the winning run stranded at third. In the 10th, Jeff Dominguez hit a potential double play ground ball with one out and runners on first and second. Guillermo Reyes flipped to Ryal at second, who overthrew Byrne at first, allowing Jon Nelson to bring home the winning tally.
Tony Barnette (2-5, 6.31) will be on the bump for the BayBears at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night at Pringles Park. He'll be opposed by righty Rich Dorman (4-1, 2.19). The BayBears return home on Friday, May 23, to battle the Montgomery Biscuits at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
