Mobile BayBears News Release
PEARL, Miss. - A seven-run fourth inning provided Josh Collmenter and the BayBears more than enough run support on Saturday night at Trustmark Park as they pounded the Mississippi Braves, 10-2, while picking up a series victory to start the second half.
After falling behind 1-0 on an RBI single by Mauro Gomez, the BayBears (40-33, 4-1) began to hack away at Jacob Thompson (4-6) in the third when Ollie Linton smashed his first home run of the year to tie the game at 1-1.
In the fourth, Collin Cowgill ripped a 3-2 fastball over the fence in left-center to give the BayBears their lead of the contest. After Kory Casto flied out to center, eight consecutive BayBears reached base to chase Thompson from the contest.
Konrad Schmdt, Sean Coughlin and Taylor Harbin all singled to load the bases for Jake Elmore, who hit a chopper to third. Donell Linares fielded and threw home, but the ball clanked off the mitt of Orlando Mercado and got away, allowing Schmidt and Coughlin to score.
A walk to Linton reloaded the bases while Collmenter (5-1) also drew a pass to bring Harbin home. Evan Frey singled home two runs to put the BayBears up by six while Casto's sac fly scored Collmenter to finish the rally.
It was all business from there for Collmenter, who tossed seven solid innings while scattering eight hits and striking out five. Mississippi (31-42, 1-4) pushed one more run home against him in the fourth when Concepcion Rodriguez doubled home Gomez.
Elmore smashed an RBI two-bagger in the fifth to allow Coughlin to reach the plate. Elmore scored in the eighth inning a throwing error by Gomez to round out the scoring. Bryan Shaw came out of the bullpen to relieve Collmenter in the eighth and put up a zero while striking out the side. Daniel Stange worked a perfect ninth inning.
