HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - It was a pitcher's duel at the plate on Wednesday when the BayBears were defeated by the Huntsville Stars 7-3 at Joe W. Davis Stadium.

It was a scoreless contest until the fifth inning when BayBears (15-18) starter Hector Ambriz (2-4) ripped a two-run homer to right-center off Huntsville (23-10) pitcher David Welch (4-1). In the bottom of the fifth, Welch returned the favor with a three-run double off Ambriz, to put the Stars on top 3-2.

In the sixth, Bryan Byrne went the opposite way for his first tater of the year to left, which tied the score at 3-3. It wouldn't stay tied for long as the Stars got back on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Cole Gillespie reached on a double and scored on a two-out single by Carlos Corporan.

Huntsville added three more runs against A.J. Shappi in the final two innings as Michael Bell homered while Corporan drove home another run with a base hit in the eighth. After Welch departed from the ballgame with two outs in the seventh, Patrick Ryan and Juan Sandoval recorded the final seven outs to preserve the win for the Stars.

Matt Torra (3-1, 1.75) starts for the BayBears on Thursday night at 7:05 in the fourth game of the five-game series with the Stars. The BayBears are back in Mobile on Saturday night, May 10, when they host the Jacksonville Suns at Hank Aaron Stadium. Call (251) 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
