MOBILE, Ala. - The season's final week hasn't been kind to the BayBears so far as they've dropped six of seven including five in a row with the latest defeat coming on Friday at Hank Aaron Stadium, 9-2 to the Birmingham Barons.

Tony Barnette continued his dominance as he remained unbeaten since June 30 while allowing just two hits over five scoreless innings. Barnette was handed a 2-0 lead in the second when Cyle Hankerd doubled home John Hester before scoring on a groundout by Orlando Mercado.

Barnette exited in the sixth, and Jason Urquidez (2-1) entered with an opportunity to protect the BayBear (58-78, 29-37) lead. Eric Hollis greeted Urquidez with a single, but the next two hitters were retired before a single and walk loaded the bases for Brandon Allen. One pitch later, and the Barons (73-63, 33-33) had a 4-2 lead as Allen cracked a grand slam.

In the eighth, Allen took Urquidez deep again with a three-run homer to put Birmingham in front 7-2. Jose Marte pitched the ninth and allowed two more runs on a single by Miguel Negron. Aaron Poreda (3-4) worked six frames for the Barons and allowed just one earned run while fanning five.

The BayBears will attempt to stop their five-game skid on Saturday as Hector Ambriz (5-13, 5.02) takes the mound against league ERA leader Justin Cassel (10-4, 2.97) at 7:05 p.m. Call (251) 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.

Key Moment

With two on and first base open, Urquidez elected to pitch to Allen, who had smacked a grand slam in his previous at-bat. Allen ripped another tater to put the game away.

Key Player

Allen's 7-RBI night was the first by a Baron since Stefan Gartrell knocked in seven against Jacksonville on June 22.

Key Number

The BayBears' five-game losing streak is their second longest of the season. They lost 6 straight from May 13-19.
