Bayard Elfvin Takes Home Top Goalkeeper Prize
December 12, 2005 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - For the second time this season, the St. Louis Steamers have laid a claim to the MISL Goalkeeper of the Week award as Bayard Elfvin wins it following his performance during Saturday afternoon's 6-3 victory over the California Cougars. Brett Phillips won the award for the week of November 28th through December 4th.
Elfvin, who normally backs up Phillips, made the start and stopped nine of the 12 shots he faced. It was his third appearance overall so far this season after appearing in six games last season for the Cleveland Force. This season, Elfvin has a 1-0 record to go along with his 76.9 save percentage and a 2.44 goals against average.
Elfvin, 24, is a Cleveland Heights, Ohio native and attended Ashland University. As a youth, he was coached by, among others, longtime Cleveland and League goalkeeping standout, Otto Orf. This was the first time that Elfvin has won the award.
Bayard allowed two goals in the first half but turned up his play by only allowing one goal in the second half. After playing the Cougars a week earlier, the Steamers tried for their first winning streak of the season. By keeping California at bay, Elfvin gave his offense time to build a lead. Third and fourth quarter goals by Mariano Bollella and Jamar Beasley extended the lead to 5-2 before California's Aaron Susi, a former Steamer, beat Elfvin to cut the lead to two. But it wouldn't last as Sterling Wescott knocked in a power play goal from Bollella to make the score 6-3 and take the Steamers' record to 3-2.
The win moves the Steamers into a second place tie with the Baltimore Blast. But that will change later this week when Elfvin and the Steamers play host to the Blast in Savvis Center, Friday night at 7:35.
