Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Chavis McCollister and the BattleWings dazzled and electrified the 3,948 in attendance at the CenturyTel Center in the BattleWings 77-61 victory over the Lubbock Renegades in the first round of af2 playoffs. On the Renegades first offensive possession of the game, Wings' LB Marvin Byrdsong broke through Lubbock offensive line and hit QB Robert Kent forcing a fumble which was recovered by Byrdsong for the first touchdown of the game. The Renegades offense struck back quickly on a 27 yard pass from QB Robert Kent to WR Alvance Robinson which tied the score at 7 early in the 1st quarter.
The BattleWings' offensive group barely saw the field in the 1st half, but it wasn't because of a dominant Renegade defense or even time-consuming drives by Lubbock, instead the Wings' offense was held back because of three kickoff returns for touchdowns by Wings' WR Chavis McCollister. McCollister set an af2 playoff record with his three kickoff returns for touchdowns from distances of 51 yards, 50 yards, and 56 yards.
The game seemed to be well in hand for the Wings' as halftime approached, but a unsuccessful onside kick and an untimely interception by Gary Cooper gave new life to the Renegades who tied the game at 42 just before halftime. McCollister got the Wings back on top for good early in the 3rd quarter on a 1 yard touchdown run and the Wings' never trailed in the game again. Jason Schule, the regular season rushing touchdown leader, ran for two touchdowns (32 and 2 yards out) late in the game to seal the first home playoff victory in team history.
The Tulsa Talons, defending af2 champs, fell to the Amarillo Dusters 65-62 at home which gives the BattleWings their second straight home playoff game. The BattleWings who lost to the Dusters early in the regular season, will get a chance to even the score with the Dusters as they host Amarillo next Saturday night at 7:00 PM in the CenturyTel Center.
