Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release

BOSSIER CITY - Keith Barefield spent the better part of the long trip back from Davenport, Iowa this weekend looking for answers to his club's 0-3 start. What he found Monday evening was an All-af2 quarterback.

Tim Hicks, last year's top quarterback in the af2's American Conference with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, was traded from the Pioneers to the Battle Wings for future considerations. The former West Liberty standout is fresh off his first full season in the league, in which he threw for a whopping 3,679 passing yards and a staggering 82 touchdowns. Hicks, a 6-4, 245-pounder, completed 286 of 465 passes while throwing just eight interceptions in 16 regular season games.

"Obviously, we're excited abuot getting a player of Tim's calibre, much less a quarterback of his calibre," said Battle Wings head coach Keith Barefield. "We're really looking forward to his being a part of the Battle Wings for some time to come."

Hicks availability came about as part of a typical numbers crunch. He left for training camp in the AFL with the Nashville Kats and returned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton where new Pioneer Kyle Rowley had also joined the club. Rowley was hard to displace - even for an af2 all-star - and has passed for 761 yards (2nd best in the league) and a league-leading 20 touchdown passes with a pass rating of 128.3.

"Les Moss (W-B/S head coach) said he was in a situation any coach would be enviable of," Barefield said. "Naturally, he didn't want to send Hicks to a division rival. Tim had played in an all-star game down this way and was interested in coming here. We're very happy to accomodate him."

Hicks collegiate career at West Liberty (WV) was as impressive as his season with the Pioneers last season. He ranks first all-time in several offensive categories for the Hilltoppers, including career total offense (7,059), single-season total offense (2,635), career passing yards (7,254), season passing yards (2,645), single-game passing yards (405), career touchdown passes (60), season touchdown passes (24), career completions (508), and single-season completions (196).

The Battle Wings' new milker gets his first chance in front of the Bossier/Shreveport faithful this Saturday when the expansion Amarillo Dusters visit the Century Tel Center. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and tickets are available at the Battle Wings headquarters (4400 Barksdale Blvd.) or can be ordered over the phone at (318) 746-8755. Tickets will also be avilable at the Century Tel Center ticket office on the day of the game.
