Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release
BOSSIER CITY - The Bossier/Shreveport Battle Wings added another defensive cog on Thursday, having assigned to them defensive specialist J'Sharlon Jones, a three-year vet of the af2 ranks who spent part of last season with the Philadelphia Soul of the parent AFL.
"J'Sharlon's a guy we had hoped to have in earlier, but we're glad to have him now," said player personnel director Clay Moose. "He's very familiar with Coach (defensive coordinator Richard) Britt's defensive schemes, so he won't have any trouble fitting right in."
Jones, an Oakland, CA native who played collegiately at Colorado State, was the sixth-leading tackler for the Soul in 2004, coming up with 21 solo stops as well as an assist. He also broke up six passes in Philadelphia.
With the Bakersfield Blitz in 2002-03, Jones played in 31 games and posted a career-high 78.5 tackles (70UA) in 2002 with an eye-opening 11 interceptions. That year, Jones finished tied for third in the league in passes defended with 42 (31 break-ups, 11 INT's) and 11th in the af2 in tackles. His double-digit interception total was also good enough for a third-place tie in the league.
Teams stopped throwing his way in 2003, but he still managed four interceptions and 76.5 tackles (69UA), ninth-best in the league. With back-to-back stellar seasons in the af2, it's no wonder the Philadelphia Soul brought him up for a shot at the AFL.
Jones broke into the league in 2001 with Tulsa, playing in only three games. In his career, he's also played some at receiver, totalling eight receptions for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Battle Wings made room on the roster for Jones by placing on re-callable re-assignment DS Jason Olford. Earlier player moevs this week included the activation of WR/DB Reggie Perkins from the league's suspension list and the re-assignment of WR/DB York Frierson. The Wings also traded DS Ricky Davis to Oklahoma City for future considerations. Davis, assigned to 'Wings last week, had been placed on the team's "refused to report" list.
