Battery Welcomes Thunder
June 19, 2008 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on the Minnesota Thunder Friday night (June 20) at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6:00 PM with kick off set for 8:00 PM. Charleston (6-3-2, 20 points, 2nd) will be looking to rebound from a 1-0 loss suffered at the hands of the Montreal Impact in a game played last Friday night in Montreal. Minnesota (4-4-3, 15 points, 5th) tied 1-1 with the Atlanta Silverbacks at home last Saturday.
This is the first meeting between the teams so far in 2008; Charleston visits the Minnesota Thunder twice later in the season, August 7 and September 13. In 2007 the Battery tied 0-0 with the Thunder at Blackbaud and won 1-0 in Minnesota.
Charleston had an opportunity to move back into first position in the USL First Division last weekend with first-place Vancouver losing 3-0 in Rochester. The Battery's 1-0 loss in Montreal leaves them in second position just two points behind Vancouver; the Whitecaps take on Miami on Sunday evening.
The game is the first of a six-match home stand for Charleston who continue their U.S. Open Cup quest next Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium.
Charleston forward Randi Patterson will be unavailable for selection Friday as he serves a one game suspension; Patterson scuffled with Montreal's Adam Braz at the end of the match in Montreal, both players were red-carded.
The Minnesota Thunder is led by former player, Amos Magee; Magee played nine seasons with Minnesota and was a member of the team that lost 3-0 to the Battery in the 2003 Championship game.
Friday, night's game will be broadcast live on FOX Soccer Channel and the first 1000 fans through the turnstiles will receive complimentary FSC T-shirts; there will fireworks immediately following the match.
A limited number of tickets are available starting at $5; to purchase tickets or for more information please call (843) 971-GOAL or visit www.charlestonbattery.com.
