Battery to play Mariners
May 10, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery takes on its Eastern Conference rival the Virginia Beach Mariners Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. The Battery enters the game looking to snap a two-game losing streak after consecutive losses against the Montreal Impact and the Atlanta Silverbacks. The Mariners enter the game on the back of a 3-2 home win versus the Toronto Lynx.
This is the first of four scheduled matches between the two clubs in 2004. Last season the Battery defeated the Mariners once with two losses and a tie during the regular season. The two teams met again in the playoffs splitting a two-match series; Charleston advanced with a 4-2 aggregate score victory.
The Mariners are coached by Shawn McDonald who returns for his seventh season with the Club. McDonald's six-year Mariners regular season record is 78-70-10 with a 10-9 postseason mark.
The Mariners offense will once again be led by former MLS forward Dante Washington. Washington scored 18 goals with an assist in 2003 and was named to the All A-League First Team. Washington scored twice in the Mariners 3-2 win over Toronto last Saturday.
The Battery strengthened its roster late last week signing a pair of MLS veterans, defender Ezra Hendrickson and former Clemson standout, forward Wolde Harris. Hendrickson made his Battery debut in Saturday's 2-0 loss at Atlanta.
