Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on the Charlotte Eagles Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium. Charleston (2-0-1) enters the game in first place in the USL2 standings on the back of a 1-0 Tuesday night road win versus the Real Maryland Monarchs. Charlotte (1-1-0) defeated the Richmond Kickers by a goal to none in its last match played in Richmond last Saturday night.

Saturday's game is presented by McAlister Development Company, it's Family Night and families can get four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for only $30. The first 1000 fans will also receive a free chap-stick courtesy of McAlister Development Company.

This is the second game of the season between the Battery and the Eagles, Charleston defeated Charlotte by a score of three goals to two in the season opener on April 17 in Charlotte.

Charleston raced to a 2-0 lead versus the Eagles with goals from Rudolph Mayard and Mike Zaher however Charlotte fought back with a well-executed set-piece goal at the end of the first half and a second in the 78th minute. With the game hanging in the balance substitute forward Levi Coleman slotted home from inside the penalty area with less than ten minutes remaining to lift Charleston to victory.

Following the win versus Charlotte the Battery tied 0-0 with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (April 24) and defeated the Real Maryland Monarchs 1-0 (April 27) and enters Saturday's match top of the USL Second Division.

Forward Tom Heinemann scored the decisive goal in Tuesday's road win over Real Maryland dispossessing Monarchs goalkeeper Brian Levey in the penalty-area and then tapping home unchallenged for his first goal of the season.

The Charleston Battery first played the Charlotte Eagles in both Clubs' inaugural seasons back in 1993. The teams met twice that year with the Battery winning on both occasions, 3-1 at home and 1-0 in the return fixture. Over the past 18 years the teams have met 25 times in competitive fixtures (regular season, post-season & US Open Cup) with Charleston winning seventeen games, losing five with three ties.

Charlotte has won the USL Second Division twice, in 2000 and most recently in 2005 and has made the finals on eight occasions including 2008 and 2009. Last year the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the Championship game versus the Richmond Kickers but conceded twice as Richmond came back to win.

The Eagles are led by one of the most experienced coaches in US Soccer Mark Steffens. Steffens enters his 14th season as head coach for the Eagles in 2010 with a career record of 166-98-45.

Blackbaud and Charleston Battery Philanthropy Partnership

Battery and Blackbaud recognize the Charleston Animal Society

As part of an ongoing philanthropy partnership, Blackbaud and the Charleston Battery professional soccer team are incorporating a different philanthropic theme to every home match. Blackbaud and the Charleston Battery share the corporate value of "service to others makes the world a better place" and will bring that to life at 13 home matches by featuring a nonprofit-of-the-match, raising awareness for a local nonprofit organization.

The featured nonprofit-of-the-match on Saturday, May 1 is the Charleston Animal Society. The Charleston Animal Society strives to promote temporary sanctuary to lost, abandoned or abused domestic animals; promote adoption; provide medical care to indigent pets; eliminate overpopulation of animals with aggressive spay/neuter and education programs; provide education about responsible pet guardianship; reunite lost pets and their owners; and reduce cruelty through stronger ordinances; investigations, partnerships and education.

There will be a goods drive at the game on Saturday fans are encouraged to bring new animal food and toys as well as basic office supplies to donate to the society.
