Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC- Midfielder Amadou Sanyang provided the only goal of the game and gave the Charleston Battery a 1-0 win, their first USLPRO regular season home victory, over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in Charleston, SC on Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of a crowd of 5,415.

"It's a relief (to get the first home win)," said Battery head coach Mike Anheuser after the game, "Tonight we held on with 10 guys. Our back four and Odisnel Cooper did a great job. They really deserved the shut out."

After having a goal called back for offside earlier in the first half, the Battery finally broke through with midfielder Amadou Sanyang scoring in the 40th minute to put the Battery ahead. Midfielder Andre Lewis set up the goal with a cross from the right side and forward Haviel Cordoves picked up the assist by putting a head to the cross and sending it to Sanyang, who took one touch before finishing with ease.

The Battery got off to a rough start in the second half when forward Dane Kelly was shown a second yellow card and sent off in the 51st minute. Despite being down a man, the Battery continued to press and had the best chance of the second half.

Battery defender Quinton Griffith nearly extended the Charleston lead in the 62nd minute. After making a long run down the right side, he passed to teammate Andre Lewis, then broke free and received a through ball just outside of the box but his shot was stopped nicely by Riverhounds goalkeeper Mike Lisch.

Battery goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper continued his solid season with 3 saves, including key saves in the second half to preserve the shutout for Charleston.

The Battery will next face the Orlando City Pirates U-23 squad in the third round of the US Open Cup on Wednesday, May 28 at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina at 7:30 p.m.
