Battery Readies For Impact

April 29, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery hosts its Eastern Conference rival the Montreal Impact this Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. It's the second home match of the year for Charleston who tied Richmond 1-1 last Saturday night in the Home Opener. The Battery plays the Impact twice this season; the return match is July 28 in Montreal.

Charleston Battery head coach, Chris Ramsey,

"Montreal are obviously going to be full of confidence having been successful in their season-opener in Puerto Rico. We've never had an easy game against them and I'm sure that their new coach, Nick DeSantis is determined to carry on the Club's winning tradition."

Montreal defeated Puerto Rico last weekend by a score of two goals to none in a game played in Puerto Rico. Both Impact goals came from penalty-kicks.

Montreal hired former Impact midfielder, Nick DeSantis as Head Coach in the off season after previous Coach Bob Lilley stepped down; Lilley was named 2003 A-League Coach of the Year. DeSantis has been with Montreal as a player and player / Assistant Coach since the teams inception in 1993. DeSantis captained Montreal from 1995 - 2001. DeSantis's Assistant Coach for the 2004 season is Peter Pinizzotto the former Head Coach of the Toronto Lynx.

Montreal is traditionally one of the stronger A-League franchises although it has not won a Championship since 1994. Last season the Rochester Raging rhinos knocked Montreal out of the playoffs in the Northeast Division finals.

The Impact received three top honors in 2003; A-League Coach of the Year (Bob Lilley), A-League Goalkeeper of the Year (Greg Sutton) and A-League Defender of the Year (Gabriel Gervais). Both Gervais and Sutton return to anchor a Montreal defense that conceded the fewest goals of any team in the league last season (21).

Montreal added two forwards during the off season, Nicola Budalic from Swedish outfit Orebro and Fred Commodore who comes from the Rochester Raging Rhinos. Highly-rated striker Eduardo Sebrango is back to match-fitness after missing the majority of 2003 with a knee injury.
