Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Battery announced Monday the re-signing of goalkeeper Daniel Kuzemka to the roster, pending league and federation approval.
Kuzemka returns to the Black and Yellow following his rookie campaign in 2022 where he made four appearances and tallied 13 saves. The shot-stopper recorded his first career professional shutout on August 31 against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, a 0-0 draw on the road.
"I'm excited to be back and play for this city and community," said Kuzemka. "Charleston is a special place, and to represent it with the Battery means the world to me. I can't wait for another year in front of our great fans and giving back to the community in any way possible."
Kuzemka, the lone goalkeeper currently on the squad, is looking forward to building on the success of his rookie campaign with Head Coach Ben Pirmann in 2023.
"I think this is going to be a much different season from 2022; the core values, leadership and experience of Coach Pirmann will make an immediate impact on this club," said Kuzemka. "Expect a Battery squad that is going to stick together, outwork our opponents and win a lot of games in this 2023 season."
"We are grateful to have Daniel back for the 2023 season," said Coach Pirmann. "He is one of the hardest working players in the league and will push our group to the limits as he builds on valuable experiences from the 2022 campaign."
The 24-year-old initially arrived in Charleston on a trial in the preseason that saw him between the pipes against Charlotte FC in the 2022 Breeze Airways© Carolina Challenge Cup. He helped preserve the clean sheet in the 1-0 victory.
A native of Clifton, Virginia, Kuzemka played collegiately at Clemson University for three seasons and later transferred to UNC Charlotte for two. Kuzemka blossomed into a formidable fixture with the 49ers and helped lead Charlotte to the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
Kuzemka is eager for another year with the Patriots Point faithful.
"We couldn't have thanked the fans enough for the constant support last season," said Kuzemka. "Y'all never gave up on us and continued to pack Patriots Point all year long. We're excited to be back with all of you soon as the new season is right around the corner."
