The Charleston Battery overpowered CASL Elite 4-2 in front of 797 Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Brandon Massie and Levi Coleman both registered a goal and an assist as the Battery booked their place in the second round.

Charleston opened the scoring in the 7th minute with some good inter-play between the forwards. Levi Coleman slipped the ball into the path of Brandon Massie just inside the box. Massie controlled the pass and slotted home into the right corner of the goal.
The Battery doubled its advantage within five minutes as Coleman ran onto an errant back pass. He controlled with a neat touch then lifted the ball over CASL goalkeeper Matt Waldrop and into the goal.
CASL's first chance came in the 30th minute after John Queeley cut inside his defender on the right side of the box. Battery defender Colin Falvey pressured the ball and pulled his shot wide of the right post.
The Battery added a third just before half-time as midfielder Josh Bolton picked out Zach Prince at the edge of the box. Prince drove a low shot into the bottom-right corner as a screened Waldrop watched, unable to react in time.
CASL pulled a goal back in the 53rdd minute with a fine strike from twenty yards out by midfielder Tim Merritt. He almost added another on the hour mark but he couldn't keep his header down after an excellent cross by substitute midfielder Dustin Swinehart.
Charleston restored its three goal advantage in the 68th minute as Massie beat the offside trap and played a square ball to substitute striker Tom Heinemann in the box. Heinemann took the pass in stride and rolled the ball into the far corner past a diving Waldrop.
CASL cut the deficit again in the 80th minute as Swinehart tucked the ball away after a Merritt cross.
The Battery squandered a golden chance late in the game as Heinemann rounded the keeper but dwelled on the ball allowing former Battery defender John Ball to slide in and prevent him from tapping home into the empty goal.
