Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery (1-1-0, 4 points, 4th) hosts the Montreal Impact (1-1-0, 4 points 5th) in a USL First Division match Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6:30 PM, kick off is set for 7:30 PM. Both sides enter the game unbeaten and with identical records. Saturday's match is the first of two between the teams in 2006; Charleston will visit Montreal for the return match on August 16. In 2005 The Impact defeated the Battery twice, 2-4 in Montreal (6/22/2005) and 0-1 at Blackbaud Stadium (7/30/2005).

The Charleston Battery started its 2006 campaign with a convincing 3-0 win versus the Virginia Beach Mariners. Last Sunday in its second game the Battery fought back to tie Miami FC 1-1. Charleston trailed heading into the 90th minute but a late PK converted by substitute midfielder Stephen Armstrong salvaged a point.

Montreal tied 0-0 versus Miami FC on April 22 in Miami. They followed this result with a 1-0 win versus the Puerto Rico Islanders in Puerto Rico on April 24. Montreal has not played since.

The Impact have yet to concede a goal and in 2005 boasted the best defensive record in the USL First Division allowing only 15 goals in 28 games played. Montreal's strong defense propelled the 2004 champions to the regular season title but the Impact fell in the semifinal stage of the playoffs.

Montreal is led by third year head coach Nick De Santis; De Santis guided Montreal to the 2004 Championship and the regular season title in 2005 when he was also named USL First Division coach of the year. De Santis has been with the Impact since the team's inception in 1993; as a player from 1993 - 2001 and in a coaching role from 2002 - present.
